The Independent described yesterday another case of evictions being part of the “preparations” to the FIFA World Cup taking place this summer in South Africa.

150 people, most of them women were evicted from a hostel neighboring the new mega-stadium at Cape Town. Many of the hostel’s residents have been living there for several years. Since the eviction some of the women, at least one of them eight months pregnant, have been sleeping on the streets.

Turkey: an LGBT organisation faces closure

The logo of the group commemorates the badge LGBTs were forced to wear in Nazi Genocide Camps

Black Pink Triangle Association in Izmir is the fifth LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) organization that faces closure threat from the Turkish government. The first hearing will take place on February 9, 2010. The reason for closure threat is once again being “against the law and morality.”

The association members stated that: “The prosecutor’s demand for closure of our association is clearly a violation of civil rights. Establishing an organization is a constitutional right and they want to take that right from us.”

Police harrasing activists in Copenhagen

Climate Justice Action, an international coalition of grass-roots organisations, representing the voices of those marginalised from the UN process (indigenous rights activists, farmers movements and environmentalists) reports illegal, “preventive”arrests in Copenhagen.

According to Kamille Hjuler, representing the network: “There is more and more willingness to trample over people’s civil liberties in order to stop
the mass civil disobedience that will take place at the summit on Wednesday. These are yet more attempts by the UN to silence any criticisms of the COP process, whether from inside or outside.”

The legalized slavery

With the increasing number of unemployed and empty promises of an impressive resume, more and more organizations that call themselves defenders of human rights  forget to meet the economic rights of a large population: qualified young people in search of employment.

The unpaid internships seem to have come to stay! This market seems to spread and be felt mainly in the social sciences and humanities, an area that young people should feel so grateful to be employed that they should work for free.

Rasist Christmas in Italy

Under the nick-name “White Christmas”, the 25th December the mayor of Coccaglio, a town of 7 thousand inhabitants on the North of Italy, will organize a chase for immigrants, wrote today the Italian daily La Republicca.

The town is ruled by a neo-fascist party Northern League. The author of the operation, Coccaglio’s councillor in charge of security, Claudio Abiendi, told La Republicca “For me, Christmas is not the holiday of hospitality, but instead that of the Christian tradition, of our identity”.
