Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights says every human being has the
right to seek, receive and impart information without hindrance.
With this idea in mind, Adbusters Media Foundation was created 20 years ago!
Based in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, Adbusters is a not-for-profit, reader-supported, magazine concerned about the erosion of our physical and cultural environments by commercial forces.
They were created after a citizen-produced television spot warning of the hazards of clear-cutting in the forests of the Pacific Northwest was rejected by the networks. It was then that they perceived the disparity between public and corporate interest and the lack of democracy regarding public airwaves.
Since then they have been producing messages about food, fashion, overconsumption, Buy Nothing Day but all these were rejected by the broadcasters in Canada, the U.S.A and Europe.
Now they are a global network of artists, activists, writers, pranksters, students, educators and entrepreneurs who want to advance the new social activist movement of the information age.
They are now fighting back their way into 30-slots airwaves in the courts and finally, last April, a Court declared that television airtime may indeed constitute “a public space,” one which all citizens have the right to access.
This is a freedom of speech battle of tremendous importance!
